Pump Type Selection for Thickened Tailings This presentation will cover attributes of positive displacement pumps compared with centrifugal pumps and how they affect the choice of pump for a specific application. Flow rates, discharge head, efficiency, capital and operating costs, and the impact of viscosity on pump performances will be discussed. Pumping thickened tailings is of great importance in oil sand operations and the factors to be considered in selecting a pump for this application will be discussed in detail. This presentation will review the use of electric motors for pump drive applications including small (Up to about 250 HP) and larger induction motors; It will address questions such as: What do we want from the motor, application issues, speed, starting, adjustable speed drives and voltage, what do we order and how do we specify it? Testing, installation, startup and keeping motors running will be discussed Nightmare on EPC Street - Pump Bid Evaluation The presentation steps through a problematic multistage pump bid evaluation and outlines the typical issues encountered. The challenges of equalization of bids are discussed as well as control of alternates, non compliance and the value of a good bidder’s list. The End User’s perspective and the feedback to unsuccessful bidders is also considered. Root Cause Analysis of Machinery Failures - From Start to Finish Attendees will learn how to complete an investigation into a pump or other machinery type failure. Topics covered will include how to start an investigation, the approach to a failure, who to have on the investigating team, discussion around several root cause failure methods/systems, and their place in the investigation, and how to properly conclude the RCA. The Effect of Impeller Geometry on Suction Behaviour (Past & Present) The cavitation behavior and suction performance of a pump are largely influenced by the geometry at the impeller inlet including the eye diameter, blade inlet angle, blade passage throat area, blade leading edge profiling, etc. In this presentation, we discuss some of the history of impeller design including the source of the 11,000 Nss limit. We then show a modern study on the influence of blade leading edge profiles, keeping all other parameters as identical, on the cavitation behavior of an impeller. Blunt, circular, elliptic, and parabola profiles are considered and the effect of different profiles on cavitation inception, bubble growth, cavity length and NPSH-3% head drop are investigated. The implication of this study on how pumps are specified is then explored. Installation of API610 Centrifugal to Achieve a Flawless Start-up for a Large Project Shell’s Oilsands Scotford Upgrader Expansion 1 Project installed 250 API 610 centrifugal pumps. The plant was successfully started up in the spring of 2011. Shell has developed a worldwide quality program aimed at delivering a flawless start-up. This presentation focuses on installation of API 610 centrifugal pumps. Topics from each phase of the project will be discussed from initial design, specification, inspection, installation, preservation, and finally commissioning & start-up. API 610 and API 682, What's New and What's Coming Down the Pipe API 610 (ISO 13709) and API 682 (ISO 21049) are the leading documents for pumps and mechanical seals in petrochemical, chemical, and pipeline services worldwide. These two documents have combined the aspects of design, materials, testing, standardization, and applications to provide users, EPC’s, and OEM’s alike with a common source of information and baseline for specification. This presentation will address changes that have been incorporated into the recently released API Standard 610 11th Edition (ISO 13709). It will also address the major changes that will be introduced in the 4th Edition of API 682 (ISO 21049). It will specifically discuss significant changes that will impact pump and seal reliability as well as other key changes. Suction Side Considerations of Slurry and Froth Pumping Suction side considerations for clear liquid pumps have long been studied, and much has been published. Many guidelines have been established and well understood. When the liquid is a slurry instead, many of these guidelines need to be discarded. Downhole Pumping Technologies for SAGD Oil Production The development of the in-situ production of oil from Canada’s oil sands deposits requires artificial lift to achieve optimal production rates. However, the use of thermal methods, together with the aggressive fluids being produced, presents challenging conditions for artificial lift equipment which severely reduces equipment run lives and leads to frequent well work-overs to replace failed equipment. The presentation shall summarise the different methods available and show how products are being developed to increase equipment run lives and reduce overall OPEX. Piping (Nozzle) Loads and Baseplate Designs for API and Slurry Pumps Due to their robust design and heavy duty application, nozzle loads for slurry pumps are often handled differently than with other types of industrial process pumps. In recent years, this topic has been specially treated in the standard for Centrifugal Slurry Pumps (ANSI/HI 12.1-12.6). This presentation gives an overview of the method outlined in the standard, how it is applied in practice and how the resultant loads affect baseplate and foundation design. API 610 Pump Repairs and Typical Upgrades This presentation will cover the concepts of API 610 centrifugal pump repairs from the end users and repair centers perspective. The as-found inspection, non-destructive testing, welding repair, re-assembly, testing and documentation requirements will be discussed. Typical upgrades including hydraulic re-rates, material improvements, mechanical upgrades and sealing system improvements will also be presented. Anti-Friction Bearing for Pumps A review of the typical bearing types used in Centrifugal pumps will be presented. Attention will be specifically given to the differences of axial play in angular contact ball bearing pairs, and how bearing performance is affected. Bearing solutions will be discussed that overcome problems such as ball skidding and harsh environments such as H2S. Bearing life will also be discussed in terms of differing standards. |
